Geography

- Pure Geography
- Combined Geography

The Upper Secondary Geography Tuition will feature thematic content discussion as well as writing practices. The lesson format applies to both Pure Geography and Combined Geography subjects.

For the thematic content segment, students will explore various topics and refer to the given study notes to organise their coverage of content.

For the writing practice segment, students are tasked to attempt the Geographical Investigation as well as extended writing questions. These practices are based on the prescribed themes under the content teaching component.

The upper secondary Geography tuition is organised into two types: Pure Geography (2279) and Combined Geography (2260).

What Your Child Will Learn

Thematic Study: Explore various Geography topics through class discussions.

Reinforcement of critical thinking and writing skills: Engage in well-organised practice sessions, learn to analyse unseen data and organise your writing to approach Geography-related questions.

Our Approach

Class activities will include the following:

  • Regular Content Recap - Consolidate your knowledge of Geography-related topics through timely recap exercises in class. This is to ensure that students are consistent in internalising key content.

  • Geographical Investigation Exercises - A distinctive class activity for Geography that requires students to analyse unseen data to derive logical trends and apply relevant concepts to the featured topic. These exercises are oftentimes based on real-world scenarios to foster an appreciation of Geography.

  • Extended Essay Practices - By using the consolidated content recap exercises, students are to attempt these practice questions to assess their level of understanding for various topics.

  • Mock Tests - Each term will feature a mock test to gauge the knowledge proficiency of each student, showcasing key topics tested at schools.

Pure Geography

For Pure Geography (2279), students are required to study five topics covered in Paper 1 and Paper 2:

  • Paper 1 - The first three clusters are: Geography in Everyday Life, Tourism and Climate

  • Paper 2 - The next three clusters are: Geography in Everyday Life, Tectonics and Singapore

Note: The first cluster on ‘Geography in Everyday Life’ is tested in Paper 1 and Paper 2.

What Your Child Will Learn

For Paper 1, students will explore three main areas:

  • Cluster 1 - Geography in Everyday Life - Students learn to make sense of everyday lives from a geographical standpoint. For instance, students will learn to comprehend the ‘sense of place’ in various communities as well as sustainable neighbourhoods.

  • Cluster 2 - Tourism - Students will learn more about tourism and its impact on people and goods and services between places. This includes the causes and consequences of tourism on communities, such as economic leakages and environmental harm.

  • Cluster 3 - Climate - Students are to make sense of the concepts of ‘weather’ and ‘climate’. This includes various areas like the study of ‘air temperature’, ‘precipitation’ and ‘wind direction’. More importantly, this topic will feature the impacts of climate change and the possible solutions to deal with its challenges.

For Paper 2, students will examine three main areas:

  • Cluster 1 - Geography in Everyday Life

  • Cluster 4 - Tectonics - Students are to analyse the meaning and significance of ‘plate tectonic theory’ so as to make sense of the formation of earthquakes and volcanoes in different parts of the world. Also, the study of tectonic hazards is essential to understand how they affect natural and human systems.

  • Cluster 5 - Singapore - The final cluster features the study of Singapore as a small island city state from a geographical standpoint. Students will learn more about the natural and human characteristics of Singapore. In doing so, students will learn more about the impacts of climate change, tectonic hazards and tourism activities in affecting Singapore.

Combined Geography

For Combined Geography (2260), students will explore four main clusters:

  • Cluster 1 - Geography in Everyday Life

  • Cluster 2 - Tourism

  • Cluster 3 - Climate

  • Cluster 4 - Tectonics

Note: Based on the school’s individual selection, students are required to only study either Cluster 3 (Climate) or Cluster 4 Tectonics).

What Your Child Will Learn

A more in-depth coverage of the Combined Geography Content is as follows:
